Planning a family vacation is exciting, but it’s easy to focus on flights and hotels while forgetting the reservations that can make or break your trip. Over the years, I’ve learned that a little planning before you leave home can save money, reduce stress, and help you spend more time making memories instead of solving problems.
Here’s my complete family travel booking checklist.
1. Compare Flights Before You Book
Flight prices can change daily, and sometimes adjusting your departure by even one day can save hundreds of dollars. I always compare multiple flight options before booking and look at nearby airports when possible.
Pro Tip: Morning flights are often less likely to experience delays than evening departures.
2. Reserve Your Hotel Early
The best family-friendly hotels often sell out months in advance, especially during holidays, school breaks, and peak travel seasons.
When choosing a hotel, I always look beyond the photos and ask questions like:
- Is it actually walkable?
- Is breakfast included?
- Is the pool heated?
- Will the room comfortably fit our family?
- What attractions are nearby?
3. Book Airport Transportation Before You Land
After a long flight, the last thing I want to do is negotiate transportation in an unfamiliar airport.
Booking airport transportation ahead of time means you can simply collect your luggage and head to your ride.
4. Get an eSIM Before You Travel
Having mobile data immediately after landing makes traveling so much easier.
You can:
- Use Google Maps
- Translate menus
- Contact your hotel
- Call rideshares
- Access boarding passes
without searching for airport Wi-Fi.
5. Buy Attraction Tickets Before They Sell Out
Many of the world’s most popular attractions require reservations weeks—or even months—in advance.
Some examples include:
- TeamLab Planets (Tokyo)
- Ghibli Museum (Japan)
- Vatican Museums
- Eiffel Tower
- Colosseum
- Chichén Itzá
- Xcaret Parks
- Kennedy Space Center
Booking ahead also means spending less time waiting in line and more time enjoying your vacation.
6. Reserve Tours Before You Arrive
Some of our favorite family memories weren’t at famous attractions—they were local experiences.
Think:
- Food tours
- Snorkeling excursions
- Cooking classes
- Wildlife tours
- Cultural experiences
- Boat cruises
These smaller tours often have limited availability, so booking ahead is worth it.
7. Check Whether a City Pass Saves You Money
If you’re planning to visit several attractions in one city, a sightseeing pass can sometimes save a significant amount compared to purchasing individual tickets.
It’s worth comparing before your trip.
8. Decide Whether You’ll Need a Rental Car
Some destinations are perfect for walking or public transportation.
Others practically require a rental car.
Before booking, ask yourself:
- Will I leave the city?
- Are attractions spread out?
- Is parking expensive?
- Would airport transportation be enough?
9. Don’t Forget Travel Insurance
Hopefully you’ll never need it—but if your trip is delayed, canceled, or interrupted, travel insurance can help protect the investment you’ve already made.
10. Keep Everything Organized
Before every trip, I create one digital folder that includes:
- Flight confirmations
- Hotel reservations
- Attraction tickets
- Tour confirmations
- Airport transportation details
- Travel insurance information
- Passport copies
Having everything in one place makes travel days much less stressful.
Final Thoughts
The best vacations usually start long before takeoff.
By planning a few important details before you leave home, you’ll spend less time dealing with logistics and more time enjoying your destination.
Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or an international family adventure, a little preparation goes a long way.
